Drew Kennedy

May’s Athlete of the Month

“CrossFit in general gives me direction and focus. I was terrible at working out before CrossFit, taking forever to figure out what to do. CrossFit takes all the guesswork out of working out for me.”

The journey.

We sat down with Drew to learn more about his CrossFit journey, as well as life outside of the gym.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?

Hi, I’m Drew! Jamie DeVoe is my wife and we have four pets: two cats (Dos and Rosie) and two dogs (Piccolo and Chi-Chi). I enjoy spending time with Jamie and friends. I know useless facts that I learn from watching too much YouTube. I manage a Mellow Mushroom in Pigeon Forge. Lastly, I would like to be very strong…

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH CrossFit First Creek?

Consistently? 1 and 1/3rd year.

WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT? WHAT HAS KEPT YOU DOING IT? HAS YOUR MOTIVATION CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

I wanted to lose weight initially, but then it became to get really strong. Now I want to be a good athlete who is very strong.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CFFC?

About myself? A ton! I can push my limits more than I thought. I have also met tons of cool people who teach me so much about weightlifting among other things. The coaches have helped me everyday to get better.

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

Too many to count: toes to bar, pull ups, new PR’s, most recently just completing the Open.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LIFT, MOVEMENT, OR WOD? LEAST FAVORITE?

My favorite lift changes and depends what my newest obsession is. Currently, my goal is 400/500/600 Bench/Squat/ Deadlift. For movements, it’s probably echo bike and/or pull ups. Wods? Those are a necessary evil to live a better life. Least favorite… any Burpee…

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CFFC OR JUST CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

The people are by far the best attribute of CFFC. We have a cool space and we have nice stuff, but I doubt people would come back if the atmosphere was not as inviting and positive as it is. CrossFit in general gives me direction and focus. I was terrible at working out before CrossFit taking forever to figure out what to do. CrossFit takes all the guesswork out of working out for me.

WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOU IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

I feel better (and depending on the WOD much worse lol). I also have more confidence. In the gym I feel like I keep getting better so that makes me want to do more. At home and work for the most part have more energy and can do more.

WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

My CrossFit Goals are to get better, so I will never reach them. But I will hit milestones and that’s really the best for me.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT CROSSFITTING, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

As little as possible. I play a few video games if I have time. I deep dive on YouTube and podcasts too much, and I play Dungeons and Dragons occasionally. But the coolest thing for me is just hanging out with Jamie (sounds like pandering but honestly if I could just watch a movie or TV and either enjoy it or make fun of it with Jamie on the couch I would die happy).

WHAT IS ONE FUN THING ABOUT YOU THAT WE MAY NOT KNOW YET?

This question might be the hardest thing on this questionnaire. Something fun about me? Now I am questioning if I am fun. I know a good amount of dumb trivia.

WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE CONSIDERING CROSSFIT OR WHO IS NEW TO CROSSFIT?

DO NOT BE TOO PROUD TO SCALE! I have been doing this for over a year and I still struggle with this. “Comparison is the thief of joy” has so much meaning to me when it comes to the gym. There is always someone better than you at something and that shouldn’t make you sad they are a resource for knowledge or aspiration. Every person at the gym has impressed me in someway.

WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WORKOUT FUEL?

Terrible. No, I love sugar. Caffeine

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

I can not express enough how cool this community is. I have met the coolest, genuine, nicest and amazing people. The coaches never make me feel dumb or annoying when I ask questions. Seeing new people join and people bring them into the fold without hesitation is heartwarming. The fact that no matter what class time I show up to, I feel welcomed is amazing.
